ADSORPTION SYSTEMS
B. Organic Liquid Drying Systems
Moisture can be removed from organic liquids by adsorption technique at a lower capital as well as operating cost in comparison to rectification or chemisorption. By this process product moisture lower than 5 ppm can be achieved.
APPLICATIONS
Mainly water - insoluble organic liquids and liquified gases are dried.
Organic liquids which are partially or completely soluble in water :
Alcohols : Methanol, Ethanol
Esters : Ethyl acetate, Propyl acetate
Ketones : Acetone, Methylethyl ketone.
OPERATING METHOD
For batch process sometimes one adsorber can be used. However for continuous operation, two adsorbers are required, where one is kept under adsorption and the other is used for reactivation. Residence time and cycle are relatively high for liquid dryers. Normally, liquid dryers are operated in manual mode as automatic plants are capital intensive.
Due care is to be taken during regeneration in a liquid dryer. Normally regeneration is done in a close loop either by vaporising the product or by using Nitrogen gas. The regeneration gas is heated by means of a heater and passed through the adsorber under regeneration. The moisture picked up from the adsorber is condensed in a cooler and separated in a moisture separator.
