The agglomeration of gaseous or liquid molecules to the surface of a solid is known as adsorption. The solid is called the adsorbent or desiccant.
Adsorption is a surface phenomenon and is directly proportional to surface exposed and concentration, pressure, and polarity of the substance to be adsorbed. Adsorption generates heat proportional to the combination of heat of condensation and wetting. The Static equilibrium adsorption capacity is higher than that of dynamic condition for a particular relative humidity.

A part of the product dry gas is depressurised and passed through the loaded adsorber for reactivation.
The pressure of the feed gas should be around 7 kg/ cm2g or above.
Regeneration gas quantity depends on feed gas pressure and temperature. In order to avoid pressure shock, the adsorber is pressurised before change over.

A part of the feed gas is heated and used for reactivation . Then reactivation gas is cooled, moisture separated and finally mixed with the feed stream in a distributor from where gas is passed into adsorber under adsorption.

While one adsorber is kept under adsorption the other is regenerated by passing hot air by means of a blower through a heater and finally vented to atmosphere. There is provision for pressurisation and depressurisation.
Adsorbers can be kept regenerated before commissioning.
Adsorption is independent of regeneration.
No Joss of compressed air.
Operation of this system is similar to open loop blower type except that reactiva tion is done through a cooler and moisture separator in a closed loop.

This process is specially suited for high pressures as only small quantity of product gas is to be purged for reactivation.For reactivation saturated adsorber is depressurised. A small quantity of dried gas is throttled, heated by means
of a heater and passed through the adsorber. For gases other than air, the purge gas can be recycled back to the suction of the compressor.
